EXTREME DAMAGE ON THE NANTICOKE RIVER
EXTREME DAMAGE ON THE NANTICOKE RIVER
NEW INFO - Permit applications for repair of the damaged areas shown on this page were submitted to DNREC and the Corps of Engineers in early May, 2008 with full engineering plans for repair work. Both of these agencies delayed issuing permits for damage repair until December, 2008 ---8 Months after the applications were submitted and just in time for the Christmas Holidays. Also only 2 months from the start of the fish spawning season when all work on the Nanticoke River has to be stopped until the end of May. Damage repair work was not finally started until December, 2009 after more delays with additional permits and inspection fees.
After continuous pounding by barge and boat traffic, here is what can (and did) occur after the torrential rains on June 25, 2006.
If the damage continues, what will the Nanticoke River look like in 5, 10, 15 years? One life long resident on the river stated that he has seen more erosion in the past 5 years than in all of the previous 55 years!!
See, Barges and Tugs, More Damage, DNREC and No Wake Zones pages to see why this has occurred?? Does this look like normal erosion to you??
